Diane Elson (UK)

Diane Elson is Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, UK.  She has published widely on gender equality and economic policy and has been active in the women’s movement for 40 years.  She has acted as advisor to UNIFEM and UNDP; and is a former Vice President of the International Association for Feminist Economics.  She is currently the chair of the UK Women’s Budget Group, which analyses the impact of the UK budget on gender equality and lobbies for gender responsive budgeting. Her recent publications include: (with R. Balakrishnan) ‘Auditing Economic Policy in the Light of Obligations on Economic and Social Rights’, Essex Human Rights Review, 5(1) 2008; ‘Gender Equality and Economic Growth in the World Bank World Development Report 2006’, Feminist Economics 15(3) 2009;  and ‘Gender and the global economic crisis in developing countries: a framework for analysis’, Gender and Development, 18(2) 2010.
